Inspiring Photography & Bicycle Project

Watch the video below, “Staying alive!”  I love this project.  The Bicycle Portraits Project is project by 2 two Cape Town-ians looking at bicycle use in South Africa. They are enthusiasts themselves, taking 2 years to ride around South Africa and meet people along the way to document how people regularly use bicycles for work, pleasure, school, etc..

South Africa is not an easy place to cycle – not known for its smooth roads, bike paths, or pedestrian yielding traffic. Thus, a bicycle is a pretty specific thing, really — it shows us contexts, values, reasons, constraints and meanings.   Its a neat lens onto people, and South Africa.  It shows us something about access and accessibility.

I like that this project slows us down, shows us what we would otherwise miss. Kind of a photo-ethnography.  It is not intervention-less (it can’t be), but it shows what is inspiring in mundane experiences – love it!  Book and info here.
